Abstract:
This disclosure proposes a modular mechanical architecture that enables a standard off-the-shelf tablet or mobile device to be converted into a configurable point-of-sale (POS) system.
The system introduces a 'Retail I/O Rail' that allows a tablet to dock into a structured rail containing modular I/O components such as magnetic stripe readers (MSR), i-Button readers, cameras, payment modules, and other peripherals.
These modules can be arranged along the rail in any sequence and position, allowing retailers to customize physical layout and functionality based on workflow and ergonomic requirements.
Background:
Retailers increasingly seek flexible, low-cost POS solutions based on commercially available tablets or mobile devices.
Existing tablet POS systems typically integrate peripherals in fixed configurations, limiting flexibility and requiring unique hardware variants for different deployments.
These approaches increase cost and reduce adaptability, especially when retailer requirements change or new I/O functions are introduced.
A need exists for a modular, reconfigurable system that allows customizable placement of I/O modules without redesigning the entire hardware platform.
Description:
The disclosed system introduces a modular ‘Retail I/O Rail’ that mechanically and electrically integrates with a tablet device to extend POS functionality.
The system consists of: (1) a tablet docking interface, (2) a linear rail with integrated power and signal paths, and (3) modular I/O components that attach along the rail.
The tablet dock secures the tablet and provides electrical communication, such as USB, to the rail.

The rail distributes power and communication signals continuously along its length, enabling attached modules to operate without individual wiring.
I/O modules connect mechanically and electrically to the rail and may include MSR, NFC, camera, barcode scanning, or other peripherals.
Modules can be positioned and ordered freely along the rail to meet specific retailer needs.
Additional modules such as battery packs and mounting adapters can also be integrated into the same rail structure.
