Abstract:
This disclosure proposes leveraging traditional 2FA (two factor identification) and OTP (one time password) mechanisms to verify product authenticity. Authentication is done with a web service and an NFC (near field communication) tag.
Background:
The sale of counterfeit products is rampant in e-commerce. Some method to reduce or eliminate this problem is needed. This method helps shoppers to know when they purchase counterfeit products. The sale of counterfeit products is especially rampant in e-commerce.

This method leverages traditional 2FA and OTP mechanisms to verify product authenticity. Authentication is done with a web service and an NFC tag.
When manufacturing a product, manufacturers store a shared secret key in two places:
1) A database accessible by an authentication web service
2) NFC tag/chip that is embedded into the product or product packaging.
The NFC tag/chip should support standard OTP authentication mechanisms.
When a shopper buys a product, shopper starts an app, or goes to a validation website on the browser, scans the product NFC tag. The app or browser will determine the authenticity of the product and display the results.
