Abstract:
T
his Disclosure proposes expanding the CET reboot tool scope for Linux distributions, make more efficient and legible the code using a different structure and add features to the UI using Python code and Batch and Bash scripts

 

Background:
We created a new program to automate and do faster stress tests for the CET team, configuring the system characteristics and requirements using a batch file and executing the reboots and internal commands showing a graphical interface using Python, skipping several steps. The problem now is that this tool is not available for Linux, the focus of this idea is to expand the scope to include Linux distributions and make the code more efficient using different structures, adding a bash script for Linux and making some changes to the UI.

 

Description:
The tool runs in two steps, first, a batch file is executed as administrator to configure three different HKEY values and open a netplwiz window to insert the credentials of the current user and thus, reboot the system without asking for user and password.

In the second step, a .exe file is executed to start the stress tool, the number of desired reboots is inserted in a Spinbox and a round progress bar is shown to see the CPU usage, the current reboot is saved in a file with the desired reboots in a .txt file, the program stops when the current reboot and the desired one are equal, Python is used for the UI using the PyQt5 library and the system's internal commands.

For the next steps, we want to use different packages and libraries to make the tool more stable, as changing the use of threads of the threading library for the QThread library, because of this is a more useful and stable package with the PyQt5 graphical interface, we will add a feature to log the time and date of every reboot to check the status of the system with more detail, and we will change the user interface into a more aesthetic design

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Usages:

  1. This tool was mainly created to complete the reboot stress test of the Toshiba POS in the CET team, because they needed to have more control over the stress test. This tool is currently helping the team to complete the test successfully on Windows.
  2. With the new implementation, the tool will be available to run on Linux distributions and will expand the scope of the team.
  3. The tool is not limited to work for the CET team, it could be useful to stress test every POS which has Windows or Linux, it is easy to configure and easy to run, therefore, everyone can use it.
